Memories from our Senior Year – October 1971

Continuing on with our memories of Lakewood High School from 50 years ago!

Hard to believe that it was 50 years ago this month that the seniors of 1972 who were a part of The Lakewood Rangers suited up for their last games.

The team was helmed by Amgelo Privitera in his first year as coach. Beset by 23 injuries, including 3 quarterbacks, they finished the season 4-5 in the Lake Erie League. However, the Rangers did have seniors Dave Norton, and Bob Reisland make ALL-LEL with Jack Toman and Gary Mikuluk achieving honorable mention. Dave Norton also was named to the PD Dream Team for what he did in their upset against the Cleveland Hts Tigers.

The Rangers fall tennis season came to an end with a disappointing 3-7 record. Among the seniors who played were Craig Aikin, Brad Johnson and Greg Brown.

If you weren’t going to any Friday Night Football games, chances are you may have been at home watching The Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, Room 222, Odd Couple and Love, American style on one of only three network channels that were available at the time. However, who can forget channel 25 WVIZ (the local PBS station), channel 43 WUAB and channel 61 WKBF showing some of the best of classic 5o’s and 60’s television and movies?

Date night at the movies? Well, if you were headed to the Detroit, Homestead, Granada or Beachcliff Theaters, you may have been watching Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The French Connection, Fists Of Fury or Billy Jack.  If you were headed to The Westwood Art Theater on Hilliard, well, suffice to say, we won’t tell anyone you were there!

Anyone remember when downtown Lakewood was THE place to see for Halloween? They used to go all out for their decorations on the various business near and around Detroit and Warren Road. Not sure if this is sill being done, but everyone went all out for this holiday!

The radio giants that we were all listening to on our transistor radios could either have been WIXY-1260 or CKLW 800 out of Windsor, Ontario. You were digging Paul Anka’s “Do I Love You”, Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May” Cher singing “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” or Isaac Hayes “Theme From ‘Shaft’”. In fact, I remember during one football half-time show (it may have been a year later) , our Ranger Band doing their interpretation of “Shaft”. It was a bad mother—–well, it was great!!

Since it was a Friday night and date night, perhaps you went to Master Pizza , Roman Fountain Pizza, Uncle Luigi’s or Angie’s. No date? Maybe your family went to Kluck’s restaurant or Miller’s with their sticky buns or even Baratko’s!

Lakewood High held their annual magazine drive and, although their goal was $20,000, it fell short by $1,633.00 (I KNEW I should have gotten that subscription to Sport’s Illustrated!). Ron Salo was the top salesman bringing in $435.00 in sales, which today would be tantamount to being $2,910.42! Not bad, Ron!
